Sustainable New Year's Resolutions

A person's mind being watered and taken care of so it is able to continue growing

The new year signifies a new chapter, a fresh start of sorts. This is a good time to introduce new habits that can improve your day to day, help the environment, and start the year on a good foot. By adopting small, intentional habits, you can grow your efforts into something meaningful and worthwhile.

From decluttering your living space to reducing energy consumption, these habits may seem simple, but they have the potential to create meaningful ripple effects in your daily life. Here are seven thoughtful and impactful habits to embrace as you step into the new year:

  1. Declutter

Decluttering is about creating space and clarity, not just getting rid of things. When you declutter for the new year, think about which items you need and which items are only collecting dust. The act of decluttering will help you be aware of what items you already own and use, decreasing impulse buys on things you do not actually need. If you find yourself wondering the value the item adds to your life, you should consider donating it.

Decluttering will also help with mental clarity. Clean, organized spaces improve focus and productivity, alongside decreasing stress. This can be something taken on throughout the year as well. If the idea of decluttering your space all at once overwhelms you, consider breaking your house into sections and working slowly but surely.

  1. Upcycle

Upcycling is the act of reusing old products and turning them into something that you will continue to use. A common example of this would be using old jars as cups, pencil holders, or a vase. Another example is using old t-shirts as a cleaning rag.

When you think about throwing away something, think about if it could be repurposed. Upcycling not only minimizes waste but also helps you save money by reducing the need to purchase new products. This is also a great way to personalize your belongings. This is a good way to be sustainable and exercise creativity. By embracing upcycling, you contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle while adding unique and practical touches to your home.

  1. Start Meal Planning

Meal planning is great for busy people who do not have the time to cook multiple meals every day. Meal planning helps with saving time, using less mental energy, saves money, and decreases levels of food waste.

Meal planning is the process of building a menu for the upcoming week or next couple of days. The goal of meal planning is to be more purposeful with the groceries we buy and live a healthier lifestyle. Time after time, food goes uneaten in a fridge because people were not as intentional as they should have been when grocery shopping. When you plan out your meals, you know what you are doing with the groceries you are buying.

There are many meal planning templates and apps that help with keeping track of your mela plans, grocery lists, and recipes. At the beginning of the week, think about taking a couple hours to plan out your meals and groceries you may need. As time goes on, you will figure out what works best for you when you plan meals and create your own system.

  1. Unplug Electric Devices When Not in Use

Decreasing energy consumption is a simple yet effective way to help the environment. Make it a habit to turn off lights, electronics, and appliances when they're not in use. This helps decrease ‘phantom energy,’ which is when chargers and devices still take power even when they are technically off. The US Department of Energy estimates that the average customer spends up to $100 per year on phantom energy. Regularly unplugging appliances will save energy, which helps the environment and makes utility bills less pricey.

  1. Walk More

Walking is one of the most underrated forms of exercise. Going on a walk, whatever length it is, improves mental and physical health. Walking can be easily incorporated into your life. Parking further from an entrance, taking the stairs instead of elevators, or even just going on a walk with a friend in a park are all great ways to incorporate walking into your lifestyle. It is important to go outside and connect with your community, and walking is a great way to achieve it.

  1. Shop Online Less

Shopping and overconsumption go hand in hand. The problem with online shopping, though, is that it creates excessive packaging waste, carbon emissions, and unnecessary spending. If you do need to buy something, it would be best to opt for local stores because you would be helping small businesses and decreasing waste. By shopping less impulsively, you’ll save money and reduce waste, making your choices more sustainable and mindful.

  1. Focus on Minimizing Waste in One Part of Your Home

If you are interested in zero-waste lifestyles but overwhelmed by the idea of it, it would be helpful to think about it as a smaller task. Rather than adopting an entirely zero-waste mindset, focus on one part of your home. The kitchen or bathroom are both good places to start.

With the kitchen, invest in reusable storage containers, cloth napkins, and reusable food wraps. This will dramatically decrease your single-use plastic usage, and making these one-time investments will help with saving money in the long run. For the bathroom, consider investing in refillable soap dispensers, shampoo/conditioner bars, and bamboo products, like bamboo toothbrushes.

The Big Picture

Each of these habits might seem small on their own, but that is far from the truth. Doing these habits over time will create a more sustainable world for all of us. You don’t have to overhaul your entire life overnight, even the smallest shifts in your daily routine can yield incredible results. The focus here is progress, not perfection. By adopting these practices, you’re not only improving your life but also making choices that benefit the planet and your community. The new year is a chance to reset and align your actions with your values. Start small, stay consistent, and watch as these habits lead to lasting, positive change.
